Unfortunately, during the night between 8 and 9 April, a late frost occurred which damaged most of the lower vineyards, especially those planted with Sangiovese, as this grape is particularly early in germination. Luckily, however, the crops above 200 m altitude did not suffer the same problem.
Spring temperatures remained exceptionally below average until June and these decidedly cool nights allowed abundant leaf development and the formation of particularly long bunches, prolific flowering and good subsequent fruit set. Thanks to these favorable conditions, followed by a very hot summer with particularly high temperatures interspersed with several episodes of modest amounts of rain and a notable drop in temperatures (which led to the classic September climate of sunny days and cool nights), this climate change was essential to allow the formation of color and flavor in the fruit and to reach the ideal level of ripening.
The quantity of fruit was much lower than average, but of excellent quality.
The fruits were perfectly healthy, of optimal composition and concentration. Suffice it to say that the 2021 vintage is certainly one of the best of the last decade.
