I Pini

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot e Syrah.

After several years of testing the growing of non-traditional grape varietes, and then experiencing new blends, in 2003 we found the final “formula” for this wine. Beyond Sangiovese wines, the blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah in equal quantities is the best expression of the terroir at Fattoria di Basciano. Very structured and complex wine, it matches with red meats, stewed meats, game, roasted meats and aged cheeses perfectly.

Harvest Report 2022

Whilst the 2022 vintage looks largely promising, only time will give us an accurate assessment.
The vintage was characterised by an unusually hot growing season but luckily saved by the rains that followed in August.
The growing season began at the end of a particularly dry winter, moving into a warm spring that allowed for a regular fruit set, although the summer was a scorching hot one. Conditions were so dry at one point, some Chianti producers were forced to employ irrigation methods in order to prevent the loss of younger vines. However, as Chianti Rufina is located in northern Tuscany and close to the Apennine mountains, it is usually cooler than the rest of Tuscany. Furthermore, our vineyards are also protected by the surrounding forests and by their location on inclines. However, the rain which finally arrived at the end of July proved to be a godsend. The fresher temperatures of September together with a regular water supply meant that the grapes ripened adequately.
So, whilst these drought conditions obviously reduced the yield, the fruit that was collected was exceptionally well concentrated, whilst maintaining a balanced acidity and a fresh fruity flavour, and promises to be of a high quality. The wines we have obtained are of excellent body and flavour, are enjoyable immediately, and also have great potential for long-term ageing.

Harvest Report 2021

Unfortunately, during the night between 8 and 9 April, a late frost occurred which damaged most of the lower vineyards, especially those planted with Sangiovese, as this grape is particularly early in germination. Luckily, however, the crops above 200 m altitude did not suffer the same problem.
Spring temperatures remained exceptionally below average until June and these decidedly cool nights allowed abundant leaf development and the formation of particularly long bunches, prolific flowering and good subsequent fruit set. Thanks to these favorable conditions, followed by a very hot summer with particularly high temperatures interspersed with several episodes of modest amounts of rain and a notable drop in temperatures (which led to the classic September climate of sunny days and cool nights), this climate change was essential to allow the formation of color and flavor in the fruit and to reach the ideal level of ripening.
The quantity of fruit was much lower than average, but of excellent quality.
The fruits were perfectly healthy, of optimal composition and concentration. Suffice it to say that the 2021 vintage is certainly one of the best of the last decade.

Harvest Report 2020

The final results fo 2020 harvest was definitely excellent!!
The bud break was at the end of March and we suffered, if slightly, for late frost . The spring as well the beginning of the summer started well with warm and sunny days but finished quite wet and cool and rainy and it was not easy because it forced us to sprays the vineyards several times .
Furtherly the managing of the canopy was not easy because the availability of water in the ground pushed the vines to produce a lot of vegetation and we need to edge the vine several times . Anyway it did not affect the fruit set but delayed the regular development of the fruit . The summer really started in July was warm and quite dry but we did not suffer for problem of draught because of the deposit of water the soils made previously. Also the temperature even if warm was not really hot , except for a few days.
So at the end of August the ripening was quite late and someone was afraid the grapes were not able to reach the full ripeness.
Luckily, as it often happen when the summer started later , we had one of the best September ever : a long period of Sunny and warm days ( but not too hot and followed by the typical cool night of the period) allows the grapes the rich the full ripeness at the end of September beginning of October in perfect conditions . The crop was smaller than average because of the small damage due to late frost previously mentioned .
The quality was very good with grapes healthy and well balanced ,which allows us to produce wines rich of fruit character, with nice acidity and good structure both available for early drinking and long ageing.
In the year of Covid the quality of the harvest was one of the few positive thing to remember !

Harvest Report 2019

The 2019 harvest was definitely a peculiar vintage, and undoubtedly one of the most engaging; yet the final result was excellent, if not great.
The bud break was at the end of March, beginning of April and luckily it was not affected by late frost. The spring was quite wet and cool and it was not easy because it forced us to spray the vineyards several times. Anyway, it did not affect the fruit set but delayed the regular development of the fruit. The summer was warm and quite dry, but we did not suffer from problems of drought because some rain interrupted the dry periods. Also, the temperatures, although warm, were not really hot, except for a few days.
Towards the end of August, the ripening was slightly behind schedule, and some feared the grapes would not be able to reach full ripeness. Luckily for us, one of the best Septembers ever then began. A long, sunny period with warm, dry days (but with temperatures that were not too high and followed by the typical cool nights of the period) brought the grapes to a rich and complete ripeness in perfect conditions by the end of September-beginning of October.
The harvest was average in quantity and very satisfying in quality, with healthy and balanced grapes, which allowed us to produce wines rich in character, with good acidity, fruitiness, and fine structure. It was reminiscent of a classic vintage of the past, when the grapes ripened mainly in September and the harvest took place in October. This allowed us to produce wine with fresh fruit notes ideal for enjoying young, but also with enough structure and the necessary acidity to withstand long ageing.
